Pumas coach Efraín Juárez has quit the club after a successful stint. According to information from Rodrigo Celorio of TUDN and reports from Súper Deportivo, the Mexican strategist has informed the university's board of his decision to leave the position, ending a stage that brought the club back to the forefront of Mexican football. Although weeks ago the coach's environment had ruled out any possibility of departure, the scenario changed significantly in the last few days. Sources close to the coach recognize that there were high probabilities of a break and finally the decision would have been taken by Juárez himself. According to available information, the coach notified the university's board of his resignation by phone, while the club analyzes the legal aspects related to his contract before issuing an official statement. The news is surprising considering that just last May 25, David Baldwin, Juárez's representative, publicly assured that the coach would continue in the institution. However, the situation would have changed after the end of the season and the defeat in the Final of the Clausura 2026 against Cruz Azul. During his tenure as coach of Club Universidad Nacional, Efraín Juárez directed a total of 60 official matches between Liga MX, Leagues Cup and Concacaf Champions Cup, registering 24 wins, 19 draws and 17 losses. His process had a notable evolution. In his first tournaments, he managed to qualify the team for the Play-In consecutively, while in the Clausura 2026 he led the universitarios to the general leadership with 36 points and subsequently to a Liga MX final. Although the title slipped away against Cruz Azul, the project was widely recognized for having recovered the competitiveness of an institution that had been going through complicated years. Since weeks ago, there were versions that pointed to the desire of the Mexican coach to return to European football. Juárez already has international experience after his stint as assistant coach in Belgium and his successful cycle as coach of Atlético Nacional in Colombia, where he conquered the League and Cup in 2024. Everything points to the fact that that possibility would have weighed in his decision to end his stage with Pumas. Now the university's board must accelerate the search for a new coach to head the project towards the Apertura 2026, while one of the most promising Mexican coaches puts his name back on the international market.
